The Undervalued Benefits of Realizing Your Stock Market Losses

“You can’t lose if you don’t sell” is only part of the story — Stock prices trend up over time, so experienced investors know to hang on through the rough patches. Selling stocks that have decreased in value only locks in the losses, and those losses often disappear on their own as soon as the market bounces back. …

I Understand Millennials’ Issues With Adulting

The business of life is my full-time job, and I can’t keep up with it — The business of life is complicated and time-consuming. I’ve always got a to-do list going, and some of the items on it will take hours to complete. To be fair, I don’t always spend hours doing them; I prefer to goof off, but as a (mostly) retired person, I have…

Reverse Mortgages Can Provide Seniors With More Than Money

They can help you acquire your dream home and protect your biggest asset — I know you’ve heard a lot of negative things about reverse mortgages. We all have. In that way, they’re like annuities; both are tools that seniors can use to make their retirement years easier, but unscrupulous companies, agents, and financial advisors have given them a bad name. …

I’m Just a Number — A Number on a Scale

I’ve got to stop letting myself be reduced to that — “Oh. You’re bigger.” Those were the first words my mother said to me when I bounded up the porch steps to wrap my arms around her. And she was right; I was. …

What Will it Take for Us to Quit Playing the Squid Game?

Do you really believe there’s a way to win? — By now, you’ve heard both sides of the Squid Game paradox. It’s drawn more people to Netflix’s streaming subscription service than any other series to date even though it’s been criticized for its stilted dialogue and histrionic overacting. On one hand, you’ve got to see it. …

Where Have All the Servers Gone?

People have good reasons for leaving their dead-end jobs — Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone? — Joni Mitchell Nothing says “back to normal” like meeting up with your friends for dinner and drinks at your favorite crowded, poorly-ventilated restaurant or watering hole. …

A Life on FIRE — Priceless

The FIRE movement has a lot to teach us about life — I was initially drawn to the FIRE movement because I needed frugality mentors. I wanted to learn to live on less for a specific reason for one year, not as a general lifestyle that I’d practice forever. But I’ve learned so much more from my mentors than how to live…

Finding Your Own Formula for Success

Maybe hard work will help you get there; then again, maybe not — I remember sitting in front of an employment agency recruiter in my 20s, trying to get help with finding a job. She asked me what I could do, and I said “Anything.” I learned quickly, I told her, and I worked hard. …

An acupuncturist friend recently told me that every common affliction she treats is what Chinese medicine would call a disease of excess. She says there’s not one major disease in this country caused by lack. Our imbalance is all about having too much, not too little — too much stress, too much distraction, too much stimulation, too much crap. We move too fast, do too many things, worry too much, push too hard. Why? Because our unhinged econ…

While I don't believe "too much" is a problem for everyone, your acupuncturist friend is on to something. Excess consumption harms our environment, which is my primary problem with it. And of course, the less we need, the less we need to earn. The less we need to earn, the more time we have to spend as we like. I personally enjoy being productive and don't see it as the antithesis to a high quality of life. I can't imagine the Chinese practice of lying flat would be very fulfilling for me but to each their own.
